Tamarind is a new villa designed and owned by an English furniture designer and completed in 2009. It is situated in Oualie Bay, the most popular beach in the Caribbean island of Nevis, where it has wonderful views of the sunset and the neighbouring island of St Kitts. Built of Greenheart, an incredibly hard and beautiful tropical wood, the house blends delightfully into the natural indigenous vegetation of the hillside. It is a steep site inappropriate for people with walking difficulties and perhaps for some elderly people too. A garden has been created retaining original trees alongside many new ones and with colourful flowering shrubs, including bougainvillea, hibiscus and plumbago. From the garage at the top of the short drive, the house is reached by wooden walkways and two sets of stairs, or via a short ‘woodland walk’ designed to give protection from the sun by overhanging tree cover. There is a small lawned area on the property with a teak garden bench for sitting in the shade.
